Police K-9 Handler Course
This course is provided free of charge with every K9 purchased through
Tarheel Canine, and is open to other agencies wishing to retrain
a handler with an existing dog that was trained either by Tarheel
Canine, or another vendor (pending an evaluation prior to the course).
This course provides basic handling techniques, and a series of lectures
on Patrol, narcotics or explosives detection deployment, tracking/trailing,
apprehension training, maintenence training, case law, record keeping.

Police K-9 Explosives Detection Dog Handler Course
The handler course will be a 3-week course of training including
both lectures (powerpoint presentation) and practical instruction,
based out of Tarheel Canine Training Inc. We shall cover the following
topics with each handler with the goal that each handler will learn
the mechanics of conducting searches with an explosives detection
K9 and be able to continue to improve performance, and learn to avoid
common problems encountered in maintenance of trained dogs. Remediation

Police K-9 Instructor's Course - Dual Purpose
This course will prepare you to train and conduct in-service training
for Police K-9 functions of scent discrimination trailing, evidence
recovery, handler protection, criminal apprehension, building and
area search, narcotics detection, explosives detection, and cadaver
recovery. Blocks of instruction cover selection and testing police
dog candidates, tactical deployment & officer safety issues, setting up training scenarios, search and seizure law, and decoy technique. (6, 8, 12-week courses available).
This course will prepare the student to conduct in-service training
for police K-9 functions of trailing, evidence search, handler protection,
criminal apprehension, building search, narcotics detection, explosives
detection, cadaver detection. Selection testing of police dog prospects,
tactical deployment, search and seizure law, and decoy techniques
will also be covered. Extensive hands on training of dogs for dual-purpose
functions, and detection functions will also be completed during
the course. This outline is for the full 12-week course. Shorter

Police K-9 Instructor's Course - Detection
This course will prepare the student to conduct in-service training
for police K-9 functions, concentrating on obedience, learning theory,
narcotics detection, explosives detection, cadaver detection. Selection
testing of police dog prospects, tactical deployment, and search
and seizure law will also be covered. Extensive hands on training
of dogs for detection functions will also be completed during the

K-9 Narcotics Detection Supervisor Course
This seminar covers 3 days and 24 hours of instruction, and we can
accommodate up to 10 dog teams and supervisors, mixing both classroom
and practical work. Evaluations of each team will be conducted. Problem
solving alerts, searching behavior, handler cues, false alerting
will be addressed. Advanced scenarios, and certification tests can
be performed. Classroom work includes methods for handling and keeping
training aids, record keeping, maintaining proficiency, search and
seizure law, and recent forensic chemistry discoveries impacting

K-9 Explosives Detection Supervisor Course
Explosives Detection Supervisor Course: This is a one week course
dealing with the administrative issues of running a K9 unit from
proper dog selection, practical issues of equipping and housing the
dog, record keeping, handler selection & Compensation, certification,
maintenance training, K9 policies, usage, health and first aid, case
law, liability & negligence, and courtroom testimony. This is a 2
week 180 hour course including both lecture and observation of K9
